Nine days to the July 30 rerun election in Rivers State, the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area has been set ablaze.
This is not the first time such happening has occured in the country, with a reputable institution, being the victim of it. Several other offices have been mysteriously burnt to the ashes without any apparent linkages. It is however hoped that these things cease with time.
Bori is in Ogoniland.
Reports on the incident are still sketchy but it was learnt that the fire started in the early hours of Friday.
A witness said “the office has been substantially damaged by the fire.”
Kennedy Friday, an Ogoni activist also confirmed the fire on his Facebook post. “I have just received news this morning that the INEC office in Bori is on fire. The whole building is ablaze.”
Omoni Nnamdi, spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident on phone.
He said, “I have received the report but don’t have details yet. I will provide details when I get to the office.
It will be recalled that INEC cancelled the election in the area on March 11 due to violence.
